What even is Walk & Talk Therapy? And how does it work?


If you're new to the idea of chatting with your counsellor while strolling through nature - or if you’ve heard of it but aren’t quite sure how it actually works - don’t worry. This is your down-to-earth guide to how Walk & Talk Therapy works at The Counselling Cove. Every therapist will run it a little differently, so here’s a sneak peek into how we do things around here.


Why doesn’t Walk & Talk Therapy start right away?


Great question! First sessions tend to involve a bit more talking, note-taking, and getting-to-know-you time. We’ll also cover a few formalities like paperwork and go through your history and hopes for counselling.


Your first session is held in a more traditional setting - either in my private clinic room in Caringbah or online - so we can lay down a solid foundation. After that, we’re all set to step outdoors together.


How does confidentiality work when we’re outside?


Confidentiality is just as important outdoors as it is in a counselling room. Before your first Walk & Talk session, we’ll chat through how we handle privacy in public spaces - things like choosing quieter paths, pausing conversations when needed, or adjusting our route if the surroundings feel too busy.


Your comfort always comes first, and these choices are made together.


What are the benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy?


There’s growing research (and plenty of anecdotal proof) that moving your body while processing your thoughts can be a powerful combo.


Some of the benefits include:

  • Easier emotional regulation in natural settings

  • Less pressure from direct eye contact (side-by-side chats feel more relaxed!)

  • Enhanced creative thinking and problem-solving

  • Good for both your mental and physical wellbeing

  • A gentler alternative for those who find traditional therapy rooms confining


Sometimes, it just feels easier to talk when your feet are moving and the breeze is on your face.


Is Walk & Talk Therapy right for me?


Here’s the honest truth: it’s not everyone’s cup of tea - and that’s totally okay.


Some people find nature grounding and feel more open and at ease outdoors. Others prefer the safety and structure of a room with four walls. We’ll explore the pros and cons during your first session and figure out what suits you best.


And if you’re somewhere in between? We can mix it up! Some clients love alternating between online and outdoor sessions depending on how they’re feeling that week.


How long are the sessions?


Walk & Talk sessions usually go for 60 minutes, and they can include a mix of walking and sitting, depending on the pace of the conversation. Occasionally, people prefer to book in a longer session for Walk & Talk so a 90-minute session can be scheduled if more time is needed.


I’m not super fit - can I still do Walk & Talk?


Absolutely. This isn’t a bootcamp or a hike - it’s a gentle, supportive walk tailored to your pace and comfort.


Some sessions may involve more sitting, especially when processing heavier emotions. The goal isn’t to raise your heart rate, it’s to create a space that feels supportive and grounding.


What happens if it rains?


Good question - and welcome to Sydney's sometimes unpredictable weather!


If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll simply reschedule or switch to an online session or reschedule. Your wellbeing (and dry socks) are important.


Where do you walk?


I offer Walk & Talk Therapy in a variety of locations across southern Sydney. These spots have been thoughtfully chosen to be quiet, scenic, and suitable for counselling.

What should I wear?


Nothing fancy - just something comfortable and suited to the weather. Think: walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, maybe a light jacket. You definitely don’t need to turn up in Lycra (though also perfectly fine if you do!).


If you're squeezing in a session during your lunch break or coming straight from work, corporate clothes are totally fine too - as long as you're comfortable. We’ll always walk at a gentle pace, and there’s no pressure to dress a certain way.


Final Thoughts


Walk & Talk Therapy isn’t about speed or distance. It’s about movement that meets you where you are - emotionally, physically, and mentally. Whether you’re curious about it or just want to explore different ways to connect in therapy, this style can offer something refreshingly different. A lot of people also swap between having sessions online, in my private counselling room, and Walk & Talk sessions so that can be an option too.
