Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if I need counselling?
Sometimes people seek counselling when life challenges start to impact their enjoyment of life. They may notice that they begin to feel more overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, have difficulty concentrating, become increasingly irritable, or have worries that impact the ability to sleep. Sometimes previous life events resurface and impact your ability to be present. These can all be signs that your mind and body feel they are not coping and that extra support from counselling may help to move past these challenges.
  • How many sessions should I have?
Counselling is different for everyone! How long it lasts depends on your needs, goals, and how often you’d like to attend. We’ll figure out a plan together, and for many people, that’s around 6-8 sessions—but it can be more or less. It’s totally flexible, so we can adjust as we go based on what feels right for you.
  • How often should I attend counselling?
How often you attend sessions depends on your unique needs. Many clients see the most progress with a consistent routine, like weekly sessions at the same time and day. However, for some, fortnightly or monthly appointments work just as well—it’s all about what feels right for you.
  • Do I need a referral?
You don’t need a referral—just jump onto the bookings page or reach out by email or phone, and we’ll get you started!
  • Is there a waitlist?
I know that when life feels tough, waiting for support can make things even harder. That’s why I do my best to see clients without a waitlist. Evening and weekend spots fill up quickly, but if you have some flexibility, you’ll likely find an appointment sooner!
  • How much does it cost?
Telehealth sessions are $110 for 60 minutes. Walk & Talk sessions are available from your second appointment onward and are $130 for 60 minutes or $170 for a longer 90 minute session.
  • Can I claim Medicare rebates?
Currently the government does not provide Medicare rebates for counselling. If you hold a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your doctor, you can contact us to understand if counselling or psychology is most appropriate for your needs. Considerations can include services, waitlists, pricing, and if a diagnosis is required.
  • Can you provide a formal diagnosis?
Counsellors and psychotherapists do not diagnose. If you are specifically seeking a diagnosis then an appointment with a psychologist may be more appropriate for your needs.
  • What if counselling doesn't feel right once I start?
That is perfectly fine. Sometimes it may be that you don’t connect with your counsellor or that you feel that now isn’t the right time for seeking support. If this is the case, I can support you to connect with another counsellor or support service aligned to your needs, or help you to take a pause from therapy and return when the time feels right.
  • What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
Life happens and can sometimes be unpredictable. To help accommodate life challenges, cancellation or rescheduling is permitted as long as 24 hours notice from the appointment start has been provided. If less than 24 hours notice has been provided, a cancellation fee for the full amount may be charged, or a 50% fee if rescheduling. This policy exists to provide fairness to all involved - including flexibility for clients, sustainability for the counselling service, and to support other clients who may have liked to have booked the appointment slot.
  • What ages do you work with?
Currently I specialise in adults 18 years and over.
  • Will you keep what I say confidential?
Yes! Counselling works best when you feel safe to openly explore your feelings. As a registered counsellor, I follow the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, which prioritises client safety and privacy. The only exceptions are situations where there’s a risk of serious harm to you or others, or when required by law.
  • How come Walk & Talk doesn't start until the second session?
First counselling sessions tend to involve more in-depth clinical questioning and initial paperwork - so better suited to a more traditional format. After laying that foundation, we can then begin to combine movement with counselling and start our outdoor sessions together.
  • How does confidentiality work in an outdoor environment?
Confidentiality remains important regardless of the setting that counselling takes place in. When engaging in counselling outdoors, we'll make some additional considerations around this, such as choosing routes that aren't too busy or taking a pause in our conversation if it feels uncomfortable in the surroundings. All of these considerations will be discussed thoroughly prior to do doing a Walk & Talk session.
  • What are the benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy?
There is increasing evidence of the therapeutic benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy, including: - increased facilitation of mind-body connection - enhanced creative thought processes - intense emotions may be experienced as more manageable when in nature - it can provide benefits for both physical and psychological wellbeing - walking side-by-side without the pressure of eye contact can help with conversational flow - it is great alternative for people who find traditional office-based settings confining or awkward - it allows for slowing down and attuning to both physical surroundings, as well as inner emotional experiences
  • Are you sure that Walk & Talk Therapy will be helpful for me?
It cannot be assumed that outdoor settings are intrinsically therapeutic for everyone. For some people, they will find that they think clearer and open up more easily out in nature. For other people, they may discover that it is not for them and they prefer a more contained environment. We will discuss the pros and cons of working outdoors as part of your initial appointment to see what best suits. We can also mix it up a bit and do a combination of both online and outdoor sessions if that is your preference.
  • How long do Walk & Talk sessions go for?
Sessions are 60 minutes. We may do a combination of walking and sitting during that time. If the need arises, longer 90 minute sessions are occasionally scheduled.
  • I don't feel very fit. Can I still do Walk & Talk?
Walk and Talk can be for everyone, regardless of physical abilities. It is not meant to be physically strenuous but instead adjusted to individual needs. At times we may even sit to discuss more challenging topics. Your comfort while processing your emotions is of key importance and any movement should be supportive of that.
  • What happens if it is raining?
In the case of inclement weather we may select a different format for your appointment, such as an online session.
  • Where do you walk?
I conduct sessions in a range of locations across Sydney. You can see some of locations here, or feel free to get in touch to ask about your local area. Please note: all locations are pre-approved to ensure they are suitable for conducting Walk & Talk Therapy.
  • What should I wear?
Appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather are important considerations - such as walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.
