Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL FAQS

How do I know if I need counselling?

Sometimes people seek counselling when life challenges start to impact their enjoyment of life. They may notice that they begin to feel more overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, have difficulty concentrating, become increasingly irritable, or have worries that impact the ability to sleep.

Sometimes previous life events resurface and impact your ability to be present. These can all be signs that your mind and body feel they are not coping and that extra support from counselling may help to move past these challenges.

How many sessions should I have?

Counselling is different for everyone! How long it lasts depends on your needs, goals, and how often you’d like to attend. We’ll figure out a plan together, and for many people, that’s around 6-8 sessions - but it can be more or less. It’s totally flexible, so we can adjust as we go based on what feels right for you. Many of my clients will start weekly and then drop to fortnightly or monthly as things improve.

How often should I attend counselling?

How often you attend sessions depends on your unique needs. Many clients see the most progress with a consistent routine, like weekly sessions at the same time and day. However, for some, fortnightly or monthly appointments work just as well - it’s all about what feels right for you.

Do I need a referral?

You don’t need a referral, just jump onto the bookings page or reach out by email or phone, and we’ll get you started!

Is there a waitlist?

I know that when life feels tough, waiting for support can make things even harder. That’s why I do my best to see clients without a waitlist. Evening and weekend spots fill up quickly, but if you have some flexibility, you’ll likely find an appointment sooner!

How much does it cost?

I offer 60 minute sessions for $140 which can be either face-to-face in Caringbah (Sutherland Shire), Telehealth (online or phone), and Walk & Talk sessions (Southern Sydney). I also offer reduced-fee sessions for those experiencing financial hardship (subject to availability).

Can I claim Medicare rebates?

No, currently the government does not provide Medicare rebates for counselling. If you hold a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your doctor, you can contact us to understand if counselling or psychology is most appropriate for your needs.

Considerations can include services, waitlists, pricing, and if a diagnosis is required.

Can I claim counselling with my health fund?

Yes, Jemima is currently registered with Bupa. If you'd like to explore using your Bupa cover for sessions, feel free to get in touch.

Can you provide a formal diagnosis?

Counsellors and psychotherapists do not diagnose. If you are specifically seeking a diagnosis then an appointment with a psychologist may be more appropriate for your needs.

What if counselling doesn't feel right once I start?

That is perfectly fine. Sometimes it may be that you don’t connect with your counsellor or that you feel that now isn’t the right time for seeking support. If this is the case, I can support you to connect with another counsellor or support service aligned to your needs, or help you to take a pause from therapy and return when the time feels right.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

Life happens and can sometimes be unpredictable. To help accommodate life challenges, cancellation or rescheduling is permitted as long as 24 hours notice from the appointment start has been provided. If less than 24 hours notice has been provided, a cancellation fee for the full amount may be charged, or a 50% fee if rescheduling.

This policy exists to provide fairness to all involved - including flexibility for clients, sustainability for the counselling service, and to support other clients who may have liked to have booked the appointment slot.

What ages do you work with?

I tend to keep my practice focused on clients aged 16 years and older.

Will you keep what I say confidential?

Yes! Counselling works best when you feel safe to openly explore your feelings. As a registered counsellor, I follow the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics, which prioritises client safety and privacy. The only exceptions are situations where there’s a risk of serious harm to you or others, or when required by law.

WALK & TALK FAQS

Why doesn’t Walk & Talk Therapy start right away?
Great question! First sessions tend to involve a bit more talking, note-taking, and getting-to-know-you time. We’ll also cover a few formalities like paperwork and go through your history and hopes for counselling. Your first session is held in a more traditional setting - either in my private clinic room in Caringbah or online - so we can lay down a solid foundation. After that, we’re all set to step outdoors together.

How does confidentiality work when we’re outside?
Confidentiality is just as important outdoors as it is in a counselling room. Before your first Walk & Talk session, we’ll chat through how we handle privacy in public spaces - things like choosing quieter paths, pausing conversations when needed, or adjusting our route if the surroundings feel too busy. Your comfort always comes first, and these choices are made together.

What are the benefits of Walk & Talk Therapy?
There’s growing research (and plenty of anecdotal proof) that moving your body while processing your thoughts can be a powerful combo. Some of the benefits include:

  • A stronger mind-body connection

  • Easier emotional regulation in natural settings

  • Less pressure from direct eye contact (side-by-side chats feel more relaxed!)

  • Enhanced creative thinking and problem-solving

  • Good for both your mental and physical wellbeing

  • A gentler alternative for those who find traditional therapy rooms confining

Sometimes, it just feels easier to talk when your feet are moving and the breeze is on your face.

Is Walk & Talk Therapy right for me?
Here’s the honest truth: it’s not everyone’s cup of tea - and that’s totally okay. Some people find nature grounding and feel more open and at ease outdoors. Others prefer the safety and structure of a room with four walls.

We’ll explore the pros and cons during your first session and figure out what suits you best. And if you’re somewhere in between? We can mix it up! Some clients love alternating between online and outdoor sessions depending on how they’re feeling that week.

How long are the sessions?
Walk & Talk sessions usually go for 60 minutes, and they can include a mix of walking and sitting, depending on the pace of the conversation. Occasionally, people prefer to book in a longer session for Walk & Talk so a 90-minute session can be scheduled if more time is needed.

I’m not super fit - can I still do Walk & Talk?
Absolutely. This isn’t a bootcamp or a hike - it’s a gentle, supportive walk tailored to your pace and comfort. Some sessions may involve more sitting, especially when processing heavier emotions. The goal isn’t to raise your heart rate, it’s to create a space that feels supportive and grounding.

What happens if it rains?
Good question - and welcome to Sydney's sometimes unpredictable weather! If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll simply reschedule or switch to an online session. Your wellbeing (and dry socks) are important.

Where do you walk?
I offer Walk & Talk Therapy in a variety of locations across southern Sydney. These spots have been thoughtfully chosen to be quiet, scenic, and suitable for counselling. If you’d like to check if we can walk in your local area, just reach out. I’m always happy to explore what’s possible.

What should I wear?
Nothing fancy - just something comfortable and suited to the weather. Think: walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, maybe a light jacket. You definitely don’t need to turn up in Lycra (though also perfectly fine if you do!).

If you're squeezing in a session during your lunch break or coming straight from work, corporate clothes are totally fine too - as long as you're comfortable. We’ll always walk at a gentle pace, and there’s no pressure to dress a certain way.
