What kind of Counselling is right for you? Exploring Face-to-Face, Telehealth, and Walk & Talk Therapy

Counselling isn’t one-size-fits-all - and thankfully, your therapy setting doesn’t have to be either. We’re all wired a little differently, and what feels safe, accessible, or helpful can shift depending on your lifestyle, comfort level, or even the season of life you’re in. That’s why I offer three flexible ways to connect: in-clinic (face-to-face), telehealth (online), and walk & talk therapy.

If you’re wondering what kind of therapy might suit you best, I’ve put together a little guide to help you explore the pros and cons of each format.

The good news? You don’t have to choose just one. Many of my clients shift between options depending on their needs - and you’re welcome to do the same.

🛋️ Face-to-Face Counselling

For when you want a dedicated space to just be — held, calm, uninterrupted.

Pros:

  • You meet your counsellor in the fullest sense: across from one another in a peaceful room, with all the small human touches - body language, a tissue passed your way, a reassuring smile, a glass of water.

  • The counselling room becomes your space. It's contained, grounded, and often easier to step out of emotionally once you step out physically.

  • It offers real separation from everyday life - whether that’s busy kids, housemates, or a partner working in the next room.

Cons:

  • Travel time and logistics might be harder to manage for some (especially parents or shift workers).

  • Less flexible if you're unwell, away, or juggling a packed week.

💻 Telehealth Counselling (Online)

For when convenience, comfort, or flexibility is key.

Pros:

  • You choose your setting - whether that’s in the sun on your lounge, in a quiet home office, or even parked in your car during a busy day.

  • It’s easy to schedule, and you don’t have to factor in travel time or traffic - ideal if you’re juggling a busy schedule, feeling unwell, travelling, or live a little further away.

  • Pyjama pants? I’ll never know. You can show up exactly as you are.

Cons:

  • Some non-verbal communication can be harder to pick up on through a screen - though a skilled counsellor will work with you to bridge that space.

  • Requires a private space and reliable internet - not always easy in busy households.

  • Some clients miss the “in-the-room” feel or find it harder to stay present on a screen.

🚶 Walk & Talk Therapy

For when movement and fresh air help things feel more manageable.

Pros:

  • Moving side-by-side can ease nerves and help conversations flow more naturally. There’s something about being in the open air that makes space for what’s hard.

  • Nature has its own calming influence - helpful for stress, anxiety, or creative thinking.

  • A little two-for-one: therapy plus light exercise. This can be a great option if you find sitting still for long periods tough or have a sedative work life where the fresh air and movement can help.

Cons:

  • The weather can be a wildcard - if it’s too wet or wild, we’ll simply shift to an indoor or telehealth session.

  • Some topics may benefit from more privacy or stillness than a public walk allows - we can talk about what suits your needs each time.

The best part? Flexible therapy let's you mix and match

Some weeks, a client might plan for an in-person session but switch to Telehealth last minute when the juggle of life gets a bit too much - and that’s totally okay. Other times, someone might ask to switch to Walk & Talk Therapy because they’ve been cooped up inside all week and know that some fresh air will help their headspace. And then there are days when a client walks in and realises they’re feeling more emotionally raw than they expected - and all they want is the quiet safety of a private room to just let it all out.

Whether you prefer the quiet of the counselling room, the flexibility of online sessions, or the grounding rhythm of a walk outdoors, we can find a space that supports you.

And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay too. I’m always happy to chat with you about what might feel most supportive right now. Feel free to book a free discovery call to talk through your counselling needs.
